Val & Maya Knitting

The scuffler project began by teaching my grand-daughter, Maya how to knit. A simple neck warmer with some unique buttons for Canadian cold winters seemed like something we all could use. Using different size needles and various yarns, we found the right combination to fit most people.

PICK UP THE LATEST FASHION TREND

Pick up the latest fashion trend for yourself and friends – a SCUFFLER!
What is a Scuffler? A combo of a scarf and muffler (remember the 40’s?)
Accented with some far out buttons in comfortable yarn made to match your personal colouring and your new fall jacket. This fashion accessory not only looks great, with no long ends to get caught in zippers and car doors, but it protects your neck from those chilly fall damp winds and winter chills.

All Scufflers are hand-made by B.C. women and children who often get together to learn how to knit and communicate in a fun atmosphere. New Canadians are especially welcome. Knitters are fund-raising for causes close to their hearts – Families for Children in particular. Our creator of Scufflers, Val Hemingway has a granddaughter, Maya, who she has taught to knit. Maya will support her “foster sister”, Amudha, who lives in a Families for Children Orphanage in India this year with the profits from her hand-made Scufflers.

Val, a retired teacher, believes so many good things are coming from this project as Canadians launch a new small business with a goal to empower women here, and support people around the globe less fortunate than us. The concepts to be learned are all about friendship, working together, entrepreneurship, integrity, empathy, simplicity, artistic expression, social skills, social responsibility, respect, and sharing.
There are fund-raising opportunities for any group that would like to start knitting in another community. Currently a Senior Facility in Brockville, and a Lion’s Club in Bellville are supporting their own needs by knitting Scufflers.

If you have spare wool or old big buttons in your home that you have no need for, please consider donating them to Scufflers, and then recycling may be added to our list of positive outcomes from this endeavor!

Scufflers may be purchased from their Web site at Scufflers.com for $19.99 or from the many Christmas Craft Fairs to be held in the Lower Mainland area.
